Start with the look you want to achieve. Matching your grout colour closely to your tile creates a seamless, uniform effect that lets the tile take centre stage, this works especially well with large format tiles or natural stone. Contrasting grout, such as a dark grey or charcoal with white subway tiles, draws attention to the tile pattern and adds definition.

For practical advice, lighter grout colours can show staining more easily over time, particularly in high-traffic areas or wet zones like showers and kitchen splashbacks. A mid-tone or slightly darker grout is often a more forgiving choice for those areas. But using a grout sealer after installation will help protect any grout colour and keep it looking its best for longer.
